Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian politician and the 10th Prime Minister of India. His prime ministership includes three non-consecutive terms.

During his political career, he was elected nine times to the Lok Sabha or the lower house of the Parliament and twice to the Rajya Sabha or the upper house of the Parliament. He contested in separate elections from four different states – Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Gujarat.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of Bharat Ratna, on 27 March 2015. For his ‘active participation’ in the country’s freedom struggle, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was awarded the Bangladesh Mukti Sangram Samman by the Government of Bangladesh on 7 June 2015.

He breathed his last on 16 August 2018 after a prolonged illness.

Birth and early life of Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh in a middle-class Brahmin family to Shri Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and Smt. Krishna Devi.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s grandfather Pandit Shyam Lal Vajpayee had moved to Gwalior from his native village Bateshwar in Uttar Pradesh. His father was a schoolmaster and a poet.

His close relatives and friends fondly call him ‘Bapji’. He remained unmarried throughout his life and later adopted a daughter named Namita. He loves Indian music and dance. Atal Bihari Vajpayee is a nature lover, and Manali in Himachal Pradesh was one of his favorite retreats.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee completed his schooling from Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Gorkhi, Gwalior. She completed her graduation in English, Sanskrit and English from Victoria College, Gwalior, now known as Laxmi Bai College. Thereafter, he studied at DAV College, Kanpur and completed his MA in Political Science with a first class degree.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee never married and remained a bachelor for the rest of his life. Instead, he adopted his longtime friend Rajkumari Kaul and the daughter of Prof BN Kaul. His adopted daughter was Namita Bhattacharya and the family lived with him. He breathed his last on 16 August 2018.

  • Atal was an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, initially joining as a swayamsevak or volunteer and rose to the rank of a ‘Vistarak’ (a probationary full-time worker).
  • He worked for several newspapers – Panchjanya (a weekly English), Rashtra Dharma (a monthly English), and Swadesh and Veer Arjun (daily) as Vistarak in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Vajpayee’s first stint with national politics began at the time of the Quit India Movement in early 1942, which eventually brought an end to British colonial rule in India.
  • He started a career as a journalist but was unable to pursue it as he joined the then Bharatiya Janata Sangh, which eventually shaped the current Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • He was initially appointed as the party’s national secretary and was placed in charge of the northern region, which was based in Delhi.
  • After the death of Deendayal Upadhyay, Atal was made the leader of Bharatiya Janata Sangh and became its President in the year 1968. Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a man of eloquent eloquence, which he used to brilliantly defend the policies of the Sangh.

History as Prime Minister ,

  • The history of Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the Prime Minister of India is also quite remarkable. He served as the Prime Minister of the country three times. In the year 1996, he took oath as the 10th Prime Minister of India. However, when the Bharatiya Janata Party failed to form a majority in the Lok Sabha, Vajpayee resigned only after a period of 16 days as it became clear that he did not have the necessary support to form the government.
  • His second term as Prime Minister began after the 1998 general elections, which resulted in the formation of the National Democratic Alliance. This government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee lasted for a total of 13 months.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s third and final term lasted for a full 5-year period from 1999 to 2004. Since Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the only candidate to become the Prime Minister of India with 2 consecutive mandates.

  • Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee had made many remarkable contributions in the development of the country. He not only served as the Prime Minister of India but also as the Minister of External Affairs and Chairman of various important Standing Committees of the Parliament.

  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee was primarily considered a pragmatist, but when he was criticized for testing nuclear weapons in 1998, he assumed a steadfast defiance posture.
  • He was also instrumental in making dedicated efforts to resolve the long-running dispute between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir region.
  • Given his inspiring leadership, India was able to achieve steady growth in the economy and soon paved the way for the nation to become a leader in the information technology sector.

  • Apart from political aspirations, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also a famous poet. He wrote poems in English. Among his famous works are the Kundaliyans of the prisoner Kaviraj, a collection of poems he wrote during his imprisonment during the Emergency of 1975–77, and ‘Amar Aag Hai’.
  • Recognizing his selfless dedication to the country, which he calls his first and only love, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2014. He dedicated more than 50 years of his life in the service of the society. He was nominated as the ‘Best Parliamentarian’ in the year 1994.
  • Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee not only proved himself to be an eminent national leader but was also a shrewd politician and a devout social worker.
