S Jaishankar is an Indian diplomat and politician. He is serving as the Minister of External Affairs since 31 May 2019. He has previously served as Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018.

He is the first former foreign secretary of India to become the foreign minister. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar was born on 9 January 1955 in New Delhi, India. His father K. Subrahmanyam was an Indian strategic affairs analyst, a noted journalist and a civil servant. His mother was Sulochana Jaishankar. He has two brothers; Sanjay Subramaniam is a prominent historian and S Vijay Kumar is the former Rural Development Secretary of India.

He completed his early education from Air Force Central School, New Delhi. After completing his schooling, he completed his graduation from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in the year 1977. His first international posting was in Moscow, Soviet Union. He served as Third Secretary and Second Secretary in the Indian Mission to the Soviet Union from 1979 to 1981.
