Sonu Nigam was born on 30 July 1973 in Faridabad city of Haryana to father Agam Kumar Nigam and mother Shobha Nigam.

His father’s name is Agam Kumar Nigam who hails from Agra and is also a Bollywood singer. His mother’s name is Shobha Nigam who hails from Garhwal.

He has two younger sisters named Teesha Nigam (Nikita Nigam) and Meenal Nigam. Sonu married Madhurima Nigam on 15 February 2002 and they both have a son named Nevan.

When Sonu was just four years old, he joined his father Agam Kumar Nigam on stage to sing Mohammed Rafi’s song “Kya Hua Tera Vaada”. Nigam joined his father in his singing at weddings and parties.

Sonu’s training started from home. He grew up learning the nuances of music from his father. He took training in classical music from Ustad Maha Kanjar Naveed in Delhi.

His passion for music surpassed every other interest and he pursued it with the same focus. As a teenager, he participated in many regional and national music competitions and won most of them.

Beginning as a background singer ,

Sonu got his first break for background singing in a film “Janam” in 1990 but unfortunately the film was not released.

He relied heavily on the contract with T-Series but Sonu got annoyed when his songs were turned down because of SP Balasubramaniam.

Impressed by his talent, T-Series owner, Gulshan Kumar chose him as a singer for the superhit film ‘Bevfa Sanam’. The song ‘Accha sila diya tune’ by Sonu for his debut film became a huge hit and people sat down and started taking notice of this talented singer.

He struggled during his initial days in Mumbai as he was not getting many playback opportunities. He did some radio commercials.

His main source of income was from stage shows as the voice of Mohammad Rafi. He did some forgettable side roles in films like ‘Aaja Meri Jaan’ (1992), ‘Shabnam’ (1993), ‘Aag’ (1994), ‘Khuddaar’ (1994), ‘Hustle’ (1994), ‘Stuntman’ . (1994) and ‘Ram Jaane’ (1995).

  • Sonu Nigam had courted a controversy in 2017 after he tweeted about being disturbed by the “Azaan” being played in loudspeakers and disturbing his sleep. He called it forced piety ‘ also said. His tweet has hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslim community. A cleric had issued a fatwa that whoever shaves Sonu’s head and puts a garland of shoes around his neck will be given a reward of ₹10 lakh. He replied by shaving his head, demanding money from the Maulvi.
  • Spiritual guru Radhe Maa was accused of several cases along with her dress. Sonu Nigam supported him saying “Just my 2 pence. Kali Maa is depicted in less clothes than Radhe Maa. Interesting that this country wants to sue a woman for her clothes. The remark drew criticism across the country and an FIR was lodged against Sonu for hurting the religious sentiments of the people.
  • It was around the time of the release of the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) where Anushka Sharma made a ruckus by Rafi’s fans for a controversial remark “Mohammed Rafi woh gate kam rote more hai”.
