Walt Disney was born on 5 December 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, US. His father, Elias Disney, was a peripatetic carpenter, farmer, and construction contractor. His mother was a teacher of Flora Call Public School. He was the fourth child of his parents.

He spent most of his childhood in Marceline, Missouri, where he began drawing, painting, and selling paintings to neighbors and family friends. After living in Marceline for four years, his family moved to Kansas City in 1911.

Walt Disney attended McKinley High School in Chicago, where he took drawing and photography classes and was a contributing cartoonist to the school paper. At night, he took courses at the Art Institute of Chicago.

When Walt Disney was 16, he dropped out of school to join the military, but was rejected because he was too young. He then joined the Red Cross and was sent to France for a year to drive an ambulance. He returned to the US in 1919.

In 1919, Disney moved to Kansas City to pursue a career as a newspaper artist. There he decided to open his own animation business. Disney and Herman made a deal with a local Kansas City theater to display their cartoons, which they called Laugh-O-Grams. His cartoons were extremely popular.

By 1923, his studio was burdened with debt, forcing Disney to declare bankruptcy.

Disney and his brother Roy moved to Hollywood in 1923 with cartoonist Ubi Iwerks, where they started the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. The company’s name was later changed to Walt Disney Studios at the suggestion of his brother.

Walt Disney Studios’ first contract was with New York distributor Margaret Winkler to distribute their Alice cartoons. Flowers and Trees (1932), one of Disney studio’s most popular cartoons, was produced in color and the first to win an Oscar.

Walt Disney produced more than 100 feature films. His first full-length animated film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
