To be the successor of Rani Lakshmi

Maharaj Gangadhar Rao Nevlekar died on 21 November 1853, at that time the queen was only 18 years old. But the queen did not lose her patience and courage and due to the low age of the child Damodar, Queen Lakshmibai took the responsibility of the kingdom on herself. Lord Dalhousie was the governor at that time.

At that time it was a rule that the succession to the rule would happen only if the king had his own son, if there was no son then his kingdom would be merged with the East India Company and the state family would be given pension for their expenses. He tried to take advantage of Maharaj’s death. He wanted to merge Jhansi into the British state. He said that Maharaj Gangadhar Rao Nevlekar and Maharani Laxmibai had no children of their own and refused to accept the son thus adopted as the heir to the kingdom. Then Maharani Laxmibai filed a case against the British government in London. But there his case was dismissed. Along with this, it was also ordered that the Queen should vacate the fort of Jhansi and herself go to the Rani Mahal, for this she would be given a pension of Rs.60,000/-. But Rani Laxmibai was adamant on her decision not to give Jhansi. She wanted to secure her Jhansi, for which she started an army organization.

Beginning of the struggle:

Won’t give my jhansi: On March 7, 1854, the British government issued an official gazette, according to which Jhansi was ordered to join the British Empire. When Rani Laxmibai received this order from the British officer Alice, she refused to obey it and said ‘ I won’t let go‘And now Jhansi became the focal point of the rebellion. Rani Lakshmibai, with the help of some other states, prepared an army, which included not only men, but also women; Those who were trained to fight in war. There were also many masters in his army, such as: Ghulam Khan, Dost Khan, Khuda Baksh, Sundar-Munder, Kashi Bai, Lala Bhau Bakshi, Motibai, Dewan Raghunath Singh, Diwan Jawahar Singh, etc. There were about 14,000 soldiers in his army.

On May 10, 1857, the Indian rebellion started in Meerut, due to which the new bullets of the guns were coated with pigs and beef. Due to this the religious sentiments of Hindus were hurt and due to this the revolt spread across the country. It was more important for the British government to suppress this rebellion, so they decided to leave Jhansi under Rani Lakshmibai for the time being. During this, in September-October, 1857, Rani Laxmibai had to fight with the kings of her neighboring countries Orchha and Datia because they had marched on Jhansi.

Shortly after this, in March, 1858, the British attacked Jhansi under the leadership of Sir Hugh Rose and then this battle was fought from Jhansi with 20,000 soldiers under the leadership of Tatya Tope, which lasted for about 2 weeks. The British army was successful in breaking the walls of the fort and captured the city. At this time the British government was successful in capturing Jhansi and the British soldiers also started looting the city. Nevertheless, Rani Lakshmibai somehow managed to save her son Damodar Rao.

Battle of Kalpi: Due to being defeated in this war, she traveled 102 miles in 24 hours continuously and reached Kalpi with her team and took refuge in Kalpi for some time, where she was with ‘Tatya Tope’. Then the Peshwa there understood the situation and gave him shelter and also provided his military force.

On 22 May 1858, Sir Hugh Rose attacked Kalpi, then Rani Lakshmibai defeated them valorously and strategically and the British had to retreat. After some time Sir Hugh Rose again attacked Kalpi and this time the queen had to face defeat.

After losing the battle, Rao Saheb Peshwa, the Nawab of Banda, Tatya Tope, Rani Lakshmi Bai and other main warriors gathered at Gopalpur. The queen suggested to take control of Gwalior so that they could be successful in their goal and the same Rani Lakshmibai and Tatya Tope, together with a rebel army thus formed, marched on Gwalior. There he defeated the Maharaja of Gwalior and strategically won the fort of Gwalior and handed over the kingdom of Gwalior to the Peshwa.
